Stamford, CT (December 20, 2024) – At 08:50 the Stamford Fire Department was dispatched to 24 Hampton Lane for a worker trapped in a trench collapse.
Engine 8 was first to arrive and confirmed the male worker was buried up to his thighs at the bottom of the trench excavation but was alert and conscious.
A technical rescue operation was conducted by the members of Engine 5 and Rescue 1, assisted by Truck 1 and Engine 8’s personnel. Trench panels were placed to stabilize the area of the trench surrounding the victim. Once a safe work area was created, a Stamford EMS paramedic entered the trench to assess and stabilize the patient. Simultaneously, firefighters removed soil by hand-digging around the victim.
The patient was removed from the trench in a stokes basket and suffered an injury to his left arm and the effects of hypothermia. The extrication took 35 minutes to complete.
Approximately 20 Stamford firefighters and command staff personnel responded along with Medics 4, 5, and 901 from Stamford EMS. Stamford Police units and a vacuum truck from Stamford Operations responded and provided scene support.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration was called to the scene to investigate the incident.
