Carbon Monoxide Incident at the Yerwood Center

STAMFORD, CT (August 1, 2024) – Stamford firefighters responded to the Yerwood Center at 90 Fairfield Avenue for high levels of carbon monoxide throughout the building.

Engine 3 from the nearby West Side Fire Station arrived at the scene in less than two minutes and found that the building had already been evacuated by staff members. Firefighters began to immediately assess the situation and found high levels of carbon monoxide throughout the building. Additional fire companies responded to the scene to provide assistance in determining the origin of the carbon monoxide and to assist with ventilating the building.

In addition, 13 occupants of the center were evaluated by fire and Stamford EMS personnel for short-term exposure to carbon monoxide. One person was transported from the scene and to Stamford Hospital for further evaluation.

A total of 24 firefighters operated at the scene.

There were no injuries to responding firefighters.

Additional scene support was provided by the Stamford Police Department, Stamford Emergency Medical Services and the Stamford Fire Department Mechanical Division.

The Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation into this incident.
