It is with deep regret that the Stamford Fire Department announces the passing of retired Stamford Firefighter and long-time Stamford resident Anthony T. Tomczyk, affectionally known to many as “Pop.” Tony passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21st, at the age of 90. Born in Greenwich, CT, to the late Anthony Tomczyk and Stell Usowski on November 9th, 1933. After graduating from Stamford High School class of 1951, Anthony enlisted in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After returning home, Anthony became a Stamford Professional Firefighter, where he worked for the next 26 years before his retirement. When not on shift at the firehouse, Anthony worked as both an electrician and as a baker. Anthony was a lifelong member of the Glenbrook AC, Eastside Cardinal Club, and the Ponus Yacht Club. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially hosting Sunday dinners.
He is survived by his children, Gail and Robert Meissner, Robert Tomczyk, Anthony Tomczyk and his girlfriend Marlene OBrien DeVille; grandchildren, Michelle, Danielle and Robbie Schrag, Justin and his girlfriend Suzanne Savignano, Jason and his girlfriend Andrea Chavez, Kelsey and William; great grandchildren, Max and Allen. Anthony was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine (Betz), his brother Edward, sister Marilyn (Trefry), son Thomas, and daughter-in-law Laura.
A memorial wake will be held at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Rd. in Darien, on Monday, July 29th, from 4-8 p.m. A public final prayer will take place at Lawrence Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 30th at 10 a.m., followed by the Interment with military honors at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Stamford at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stamford Firefighters Local 786 Burn Foundation, 629 Main Street, Stamford, CT.
