It is with deep regret that the Stamford Fire Department announces the passing of retired Deputy Fire Marshal Norman (Norm) Fox. Norm passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 81 years old in Stamford, CT. Norm was born September 15, 1942 to the late Lucille Fox Schultz (Davis) and Frederick Fox. He was a life-long Stamford resident living in Springdale his entire life. Norm is survived by his wife, Sandra Fox (Jerabek), his son Jeff Fox, daughter Katy Fox and his grandchildren, Lila Fox, Nate Fox and Noah Fox of Wilton, CT.
Norm graduated from Stamford High School in 1960. Upon graduating, he worked in color desk proof press publications at Condé Nast Publications. On May 7th, 1964 he enlisted in the Army. After completing basic training, he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, working as a Military Pay Specialist for the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles until honorably discharged on May 5th, 1967. Upon his return to Stamford he briefly worked at Baldwin Technology. In 1968, he began working at Raytheon Co, Machlett Laboratories in Springdale, CT. He spent 17 years in the programming department and ultimately became a Senior IMS Programmer in the days of punch cards and room-sized machines. In 1986, Norm made a career change, becoming a Residential Construction Foreman with Davenport Ridge Associates, helping to build homes in the Davenport Farms development. During these years he was also a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Springdale Fire Company. In 1985 when he was 45 years old, he joined Springdale Fire Company as one of the first paid firefighters and eventually the district consolidated with Stamford Fire and Rescue. He ultimately became a Deputy Fire Marshal in downtown Stamford, CT, a job that he loved and was passionate about. Throughout his career, he was focused on continuing education, and he even became certified as a specialty diver and surface ice rescue technician with the fire department. He retired from his career in 2004.
Norm enjoyed being outside and was attentive with his garden and plants in the house and yard, cultivating beautiful flowers and vegetables at ease. He coached his son and daughter’s youth soccer teams and never missed a game. Along with his volunteer work at Springdale Fire Company, he was a board member with the Springdale Neighborhood Association, working closely with Marilyn Trefrey during its early years. He volunteered with the Stamford Firehawks program as a counselor to help youth arsonists. After retiring, he was able to fully focus on his hobbies which included: building and collecting model cars, collecting shells, stamps and rocks and enjoying traveling with his wife.
Viewing hours will be on Tuesday, May 14th from 4pm – 8pm at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. Prayer service will be on Wednesday, May 15th at 11am at the funeral home, with a burial to follow at St John’s Cemetery in Darien, CT.
