It is with deep regret that the Stamford Fire Department announces the passing of retired Assistant Fire Chief William J Smith, III.  “Billy” passed away on October 27, 2022, at the age of 71.

Born in Bronx, NY, Billy moved to Stamford at a young age and graduated from Stamford High prior to attending the University of Connecticut. In October 1977, Billy joined the Stamford Fire Department and rose through the ranks to become Assistant Chief before retiring as Deputy Chief in 2013. Known for his dedication to the department and his fellow firemen, he truly enjoyed serving the city for 35 years. Along the way, Billy also had a hand in the family business working beside his brother Tom at Bill’s Refrigeration, which was founded by their father.

Known for his love of rock n’ roll, a good cheeseburger and great conversation, Billy will be remembered for his huge heart and desire to help others. After retirement, Billy shared his days with his fiancé, Michele, and visits with his grandchildren who knew him as Pop-Pop.

Preceded in death by his parents, William J. Smith Jr and Dorothy J. Smith, Billy is survived by his fiancé, Michele Beland Speer of Norwalk; his children, Grant Smith of Stamford, and Alix Sleeper (Aaron) of Limington, ME; his grandchildren Corbin, Emma, and Liam; and his siblings Thomas Smith and Michele Mira both of Stamford.

Family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, November 6th from 2pm to 6pm at Bosak Funeral Home 453 Shippan Ave, in Stamford, CT. A Prayer Service will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, November 7th at the funeral home. His interment will be at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, CT.
