(Stamford, CT) – At 3:37 pm, the Stamford Fire Department responded to the Hinckley boat yard at 2 Selleck Street for a boat on fire at the gas dock. Engine 3 from the West Side firehouse was first to arrive and reported a fully involved boat fire close to the dock. Engine 3 began to deploy hose lines; however, the boat was adrift and was pushed to the east side of the canal by the prevailing wind. The Deputy Chief ordered all responding fire department units to respond to Harbor Point Road on the east side of the canal.  

The original boat on fire came to rest at a section of dock behind the Beacon apartments at 1 Harbor Point Road. The fire immediately extended to the dock, 3 additional boats, and a floating tiki bar. A water and land based firefighting effort was mounted from shore on Pacific Street utilizing 3 hose lines, and by fireboats in the canal.

The original boat on fire and a second (on fire) continued to drift south in the canal and were corralled approximated 200 feet south of the main body of fire. The original boat’s fuel tank ruptured and caused a floating fuel fire at the southern section of the dock at Harbor Point. This second fire severely exposed the northern most dock and additional boats moored at the Ponus Yacht Club.    

A second separate water and land based firefighting effort was mounted by additional fire department units on Pacific Street utilizing an additional 2 hose lines, and by fireboats in the canal. The southern fire was quickly controlled and firefighting foam was used for final extinguishment of all boats involved and the leaking fuel hazard.

The fire was placed under control at 4:52 pm.

The Stamford Fire Department responded with 5 engines, 2 truck companies, 1 rescue company, the Deputy Chief, and a Safety Officer for a total of 35 personnel.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
