SFD Retired Fire Captain Salvatore Salatino, a lifelong resident of Stamford, passed away peacefully at Stamford Hospital, with his family at his side, on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. He was 89 years old. He was born September 6, 1926 to the late Salvatore and Mary (Letizio) Salatino.
Sal grew up in Stamford and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of 17, and was awarded the American Theater, Victory, and European medals for his service. Upon his discharge, he returned to Stamford and later joined the Stamford Fire Department. Sal was truly dedicated to the department, from which he retired in 1987 at the rank of Captain after 31 years of devoted service. Famously generous throughout his life, he was known as someone who was always there to lend a helping hand. He had a unique sense of humor and was deeply loved by family, friends and coworkers alike.
Sal is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Lionetti) Salatino, his children, Cheryl Salatino, of Sudbury, MA, and Kevin Salatino, of Pasadena, CA, his two step-sisters, Anna Lind and Virginia Molinaro, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Sal’s brothers, Ralph and Michael Salatino, a sister, Theresa Piacenza, and his step-father, Joseph Ciuffo, also predeceased him.
The Salatino family will receive the sympathy and condolences of friends and family on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 4pm to 8pm at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 10am at Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902. The entombment will follow and will be held in private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to The Stamford Firefighters Local 786 Burn Foundation, 629 Main St., Stamford, CT 06901.
